4A member of the oxalic series of acids, originally obtained by the action of nitric acid upon cork, but easily prepared, similarly, from oleic acid or other fatty acids. It is a crystalline body which melts at 140 degrees C., dissolves readily in boiling water, and mixes with fixed oils. When strongly heated, it gives off suffocating vapouis.
