A group of organic, liquid, inflammable compounds containing sulphur, analogous to the monohydric alcohols. They have a very sharp, unpleasant odour, are insoluble in water but soluble in alcohol. Their relationship to alcohol is shown by the two illustrative formula: They may be prepared by several methodsas, for example, by heating alcohol with phosphorus pentasulphide., the oxygen being thus replaced by sulphur.
