as obtained from the roots of the GJtycyrrhiza glabra and Gl. echinata, contains a sweet, amorphous substance, soluble in alcohoi and hot water, named glycyrrhizin, which is said to yield glucose when boiled with dilute sulphuric acid. Spanish liquorice is used as a demulcent remedy for coughs, etc.
