Members of the safranin class of dye-stuffs. They are violet-blue to gray-blue in color, and are formed upon heating various azo-azobenzenes and amido-azo- benzenes with anilin hydrochlorids. They are also called nigrosins. They are used to impart a blue color to wool, cotton, and silk. See Pigments, Conspectus of.
