A genus of poisonous shrubs of several species, having a wide geographic distribution. C. myrtifolia, used in dyeing and tanning, has poisonous berries and shoots. The seeds and shoots of C. sarmentosa of New Zealand afford what is called toot-poison. The memory is said to be impaired after recovery from poisoning by this plant.
