A crystalline substance which melts at 570 C., is readily soluble in water and alcohol; used as a soporific, and having antiseptic properties. By the action of sulphuric acid it is converted into chloral, a thin oily liquid of sp. gr. 1512, which boils at 98 degrees C., and becomes reconverted into the hydrate when mixed with a small quantity of water, heat being evolved. Chloral is prepared by the chlorination of alcohol and subsequent distillation.
