A crystalline fatty acid of the normal series and the chief constituent of beeswax, being contained in combination as cerylic cerotate in Chinese wax. It melts at 78 degrees C. and is solu. le in hot alcohol. It can be obtained from Chinese wax by melting that substance with potash or by its dry distillation, and from paraifin wax by oxidation with chromic acid.
