A thin, colourless, poisonous liquid, of pungent aromatic odour, which boils at 77 degrees C., prepared from chloroform or from carbon disulphide by the action of chlorine. It has a sp. gr. of i,5835, and is largely used as a solvent for fats, in fire extinguishers, and making cleaning compounds. Experience has shown that it 115 dangerous to use carbon tetrachloride fire extinguishers in confined spaces where users cannot avoid breathing the poisonous fumes that are produced by its decomposition.
