What is BUTYRIC ACID?

oxidation of the corresponding butyl alcohol and in the butyric fermentation of sugar or starch being secondarily produced from lactic acid; it also occurs in glyceric combination in butter, and communicates the socalled rancid odour to that substance when stale. It is found present in the free state in perspiration and in the secretions of certain insects. It ig a colourless liquid of rancid odour when volatilized, boils at 1624 degrees C., and has a sp. gr. of 0958 to 0960. It is used in medicine and in varnishmaking, etc.
