A colourless or faintly yellow creosotic liquid obtained from the tar resulting from the distillation of beechwood, and containing, amongst other phenolic constituents, an active liquid named creosol. which boils at 220 degrees C. It is soluble in alcohol and ether, and to some extent in water; sp. gr., io8o; boilingpuint, 205 degrees220 degrees C. It is preferably prepared from Faf>us sylvatica or F. ferruginea.
