The pure alcohol has the formula C5H1SQ, but the commercial article is, or was, a mixture prepared from fusel oil. It is made in large quantities as a solvent of cellulose for making socalled “dope,” for use in connection with the manufacture of aeroplanes. It is a clear, colourless liquid, of sp. gr. o8io, boiling at 130 degrees C., soluble in water, alcohol, ard ether; obtained as a byproduct in the production of ordinary alcohol from starch or sugar by fermentation.
