A bitter and drink, used in France and Switzerland, prepared from carious specie? of Artemesia absinthium, which also yield absinthe, or wormwood, oil. The unexpanded flowerheads of another variety are the source of santonin. A substance named absinthin is said to constitute the bitter principle of wonnwood, and is a crystalline body, slightly soluble in water and readily soluble in alcohol. Absinthe oil has a sp. gr. of 092 to o#g55; a refractive index of 1 “46 to i47, and is soluble in alcohol, ether, etc.
